Black Mountain Lodge Kurodake opens its doors this winter, offering the first ski lodge accommodation in Sounkyo Hokkaido. The lodge is equipped with a communal kitchen, 5 comfortable western style rooms, 3 bathrooms and is located across the street from the Kurodake ropeway.

Kurodake ski resort is one of Hokkaido’s best kept secrets; home to some of the longest and steepest terrain on the island it breaks the Japan mould. Generally the knock on Hokkaido skiing is that while it has some of the most consistent, quality snow conditions in the world, the terrain is fairly mellow; but, unlike most resorts on the island, Kurodake is not only home to Hokkaido’s legendary champagne powder but also offers true big mountain skiing and endless backcountry options.

Please be advised that this ski resort does very little to manage the terrain outside of its one groomed trail. This in many ways is a bonus as unlike most Japanese resorts, skiing is permitted anywhere on the mountain; however you are skiing at your own risk and there are a wide variety of unmarked hazards including giant cliffs to be avoided. As a result we highly recommend hiring a guide to show you the best lines on the mountain.
